WHAT does a Comprehensive Eye Exam from an Optometrist in Boise include?

Since your optometrist is your primary eye care specialist, a routine, comprehensive eye exam is a key part of their care to help prevent and treat common eye problems. (Please note that eye exams are important for children and adults, and Dr. Bingham is an experienced eye doctor for children.) An eye check-up consists of several smaller tests to evaluate the overall health of your eyes.

Common parts of an eye exam include:

Testing eye muscles

This is sometimes called an extraocular movement (eom) test. It means making sure your eyes have a full range of movement.

Examining how clearly you see without glasses or contacts

This is also referred to as a visual acuity test, the stereotypical eye test where a patient looks at a chart with a big letter “E” at the top.

Doing an eye pressure test

This measures how tightly your eye is filled with fluid, and helps determine the risk of developing glaucoma. At Clear Eye, we use the latest technology, so we can take this measurement without having to puff air in your eyes!

Checking light refraction in the eye

The clarity of your vision can be checked by looking at how light refracts (bends) through the eye’s cornea or lens. This is done by shining a dim light in the eye while adjusting lenses.

Assessing peripheral vision

Perimetry is used to make sure you can see through the full range of your eye and check for any areas of missing vision.

Performing a color blind or color vision test

Some people have color vision deficiency without knowing it. In fact, 1 in 12 men are born with color vision deficiency. An exam using images that require you to distinguish among different colors helps know to what degree you can see colors.

Conducting a slit-lamp evaluation

This sounds more intimidating than it is. A patient simply rests their face on a chin support and the optometrist uses a rotating light that is focused through a narrow slit to look into a patient’s eyes. Many eye conditions can be diagnosed this way, including problems with your eyelashes, eyelids, cornea, and iris (the colored part of your eye) and retina.

Doing a retinal exam

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that connects to the optic nerve to send information to your brain. A healthy retina is important to healthy eyes.

Screening for glaucoma and other common eye disorders

Checking for diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other advanced eye conditions means possibly preventing and more successfully treating these conditions.
These, and possibly other tests depending on your eye health history or family's eye health history, are all parts of a comprehensive eye exam. Dr. Bingham at Clear Eye Total Eye Care is also equipped with the latest technology (devices such as digital phoropters, fundus camera, OCT, and visual field machine) to do all of these tests as quickly, comfortably, and accurately as possible.
