Sudden Loss of Vision

Vision Loss in Boise

SUDDEN Vision Loss Treatment by Optometrist in Boise, Idaho

Sudden blindness or loss of vision in one or both eyes is a serious condition and should be treated with an eye exam by an eye care specialist immediately. Dr. Bingham and the team at Clear Eye Total Eye Care are capable eye specialists, particularly for follow-up care if you’ve been seen in an emergency room for urgent symptoms.
It’s important to note that not every eye condition should be initially treated at an optometry clinic.

For sudden blindness in one or both eyes for an unknown cause or due to eye injuries, you should call 911 or get to the nearest emergency room.

If you have a diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, or another known condition that can cause sudden blindness, you have the option of seeking eye care at our clinic in Boise.

You can reach us by calling (208) 629-8326, or even make a same-day or walk-in eye appointment.

Causes of Sudden Loss of Vision With or Without Eye Pain

Eye Trauma

See our Minor Eye Injuries page to learn about the kinds of eye injuries that can be treated in our family eye care clinic versus those that should be addressed at an emergency room.

Damaged or Blocked Blood Vessels

Diabetic retinopathy can cause blood vessel damage that can lead to a damaged or detached retina, and therefore sudden vision loss. Other vascular diseases, like hypertension or high cholesterol, can cause blockage to the veins and arteries in the eye, causing retinal damage that is often permanent.

Stroke

A stroke can affect the optic nerve or the occipital lobe in the brain, which are both responsible for your ability to receive and perceive sight. A stroke is a medical emergency that must be treated at an emergency room. Follow-up treatment may occur with a good optometrist, however.

Macular Degeneration

Whether this is age-related (AMD) macular degeneration or another form, the last stages of declining eyesight may take place more quickly than expected, causing that loss to feel very sudden. Having the care of a good eye doctor is important for early detection and treatment in these cases.
